The goldmine right under your nose
 When I first heard about manhole-cover thieves, I didn't get what they were thinking to themselves... I mean... what can you possibly do with a manhole cover?! I mean, considering that someone could fall in the open hole, it could cause flooding when it rains, and the fact that they are extremely heavy, it doesn't seem like such a great idea.
Turns out just one is worth about 1,000-2,000 shekels. About 30,000 manhole-covers have been stolen so far, so just imagine what a fortune those thieves have made! The weirder part is what happens with the manhole-covers after they're stolen: they make their way from the Haifa port to Greece and Turkey, where they're taken directly to China. The Chinese recycle the iron and use it to build all kinds of stuff for the coming Olympics. |
